The ongoing question: How do we pay for online news?

Will Rupert Murdoch’s plan to put all his newspapers’ online content behind a paid firewall and out of Google’s spidering reach pay off in 2010 and beyond?

In my monthly audio contribution for Media Bullseye, I say no-but that doesn’t mean “all content wants to be free,” either. There’s a real cost in producing and reporting professional news, and that cost has to be paid for … somehow. The struggle for newspapers and other mainstream media outlets, of course, is finding that new business model before becoming extinct.
